In modern times, low-rise buildings are developed in high density which leads to less and less "empty" space and "no blank space" around buildings has become a common phenomenon. Some residents prefer to design their own courtyards, but in such an improper way that exterior space is disrupted and public space and environment are violated, and the interior and exterior space are never closely related. Under this circumstance, how to create a perfect combination of interior and exterior space, i.e. the cohesion between buildings and courtyards, has become a new goal for architects. The privacy and publicity of courtyard have been more complicated than ever before, and the spacial attributes differentiation would no longer depend only on landscape or architecture attributes. On one hand, homogenization in space division has further made the privilege of space privacy begin to disappear; on the other hand, homogenization in public environment has cause changes in space publicity. From the perspective of urban design and landscape design, if we show enough modesty in micro courtyard design, then hopefully this will have positive influence on public space design as well as in urban design. This thesis first uses elements as point, line, surface, cubic to further understand courtyard space, and mainly focuses on the cubic part, from which the conception and design method of the volumetric method is ushered. Then, by referring to relevant courtyard cases to analyze this method, which in detail is to form a systematic perspective on different boundaries and spacial awareness effects within a box. Further conclusion of the courtyard texture and the space transparency is more important, as according to which the relative considerations and thoughts on Realism-Artistic courtyard space is promoted. Last of all is a conclusion for the whole thesis based on the volumetric method and the writer’s creating experience.
