Distribution network, which connects the transmission network and the electricity customers, is an important component of the power system and undertakes the distribution of electric energy. Nevertheless, the development of the power source and the transmission network was stressed early in China instead of the lOkV or lower distribution network, which has relatively simpler structure and lower impact on the power system. Therefore, the network loss rate is generally high when the distribution network is operating. The high loss rate goes against the policies of energy saving and emission reduction, and influences the economical operation of the power grid enterprises. Aiming the current situation, this paper studied the technical loss reduction measures of the medium or low voltage distribution network and the loss reduction potential in depth, and some research achievements were obtained.Firstly, this paper conducts a summary of the distribution network line loss and line loss rate and makes a brief analysis of the composition and classification of the distribution network line loss. Then, the relate theories of three major technical loss reduction measures are introduced, including the economical operation of the transformer, the reconfiguration of distribution network and reactive power compensation.Secondly, a comprehensive loss reduction mathematical model of distribution network is established concerning the economical operation of the transformer, the reconfiguration of distribution network and reactive power compensation. Simultaneously, the genetic algorithm, which is improved in the aspects of cross-rate and mutation rate and owns better search performance, is proposed to solve the model. The IEEE-33 system is taken as an example to demonstrate the efficiency of the established model in reducing the distribution network line loss.At last, this paper builds an evaluation index system of distribution network loss reduction potential and puts forward two methods to calculate it. One of the methods is calculating the loss reduction potential respectively of the economical operation of the transformer, the reconfiguration of distribution network and reactive power compensation, then using the traditional empirical formula to calculate the comprehensive loss reduction potential. The other method is conducting three loss reduction measures in the distribution network at the same time, and calculating the loss reduction potential directly based on the established model. Taking one of the distribution networks of Hainan for example, this paper applied the two methods to evaluate its comprehensive loss reduction potential. The evaluation result is carried on comparative analysis to prove the rationality of this paper’s method.
