With the development of smart grid, the uncertainty of grid is becoming more and more serious. Developing of energy storage technology makes energy storage system playing an effective role in the grid become possible. Energy storage technology has a wide range of applications in the grid in the future. Energy storage technology changes the demand and supply balance status in real time to some extent. Energy storage has a certain value in delaying the expansion of the power grid and improving power grid reliability and facilitates access to intermittent energy. Application of energy storage technology can effectively stabilize the volatility of intermittent energy and improve the ability of renewable energy consumption. However, the profit of energy storage system which only provides a single service is poor, this limits the promotion and application of energy storage system. Energy storage system can provide compatible services to improve their economy.This dissertation mainly researches the value of energy storage system which provides load following service and emergency backup service. Through the analysis of energy storage technology, combined with the complementary between the different services that energy storage device can perform. This dissertation also analyzes the probability of providing multiple services by energy storage system. This dissertation also analyzes the probability of providing load following service and emergency backup service at the same time. This paper presents a calculation method for assessing the value of energy storage system. Considering the characteristics of charging and discharging energy of energy storage system obeying the Laplace distribution, A model is presented for modeling the energy storage system. Combined with the Markov model of electric equipment, the value of energy storage system is assessed. A method is presented for calculating the value of load following service and emergency backup service based on Monte Carlo method. Case study shows the value of energy storage system.
