Rapid development of Chinese economic requires sustained demand of electrical energy. In the meantime, it poses a huge challenge for the reliability of power grid. Icing is common natural phenomena that results in live line fault. Failures of transmission lines in the field trigger severe consequence towards operation of the power grid. During January 3rd to 8th 2013, Zhejiang Power Grid suffered from an ice disaster due to freezing rain and snow weather. There is fault in 24 live line (above 110kV), among which, there is three 500kV line, twenty 220kV line and one 110kV line.since 2008, Zhejiang Power Grid once again trapped in widespread blackout caused by freezing rain and snow. This paper looked into recent transmission line fault caused by ice disaster in Zhejiang Power Grid. By analyzing the influence of ice thickness, tower loading, line spacing affected by ice unloading in different situations, and many other factors, it defines the reasons of transmission line fault. Moreover, it proposed techniques to prevent and cope with ice damage in Zhejiang Power Grid. The achievement will ensure the safe operation of live lines exposed to snow and freezing weather, and improve the operation quality of Zhejiang grid as well.
