In recent years, with the accelerating process of urbanization and the aggravating of environmental problems worldwide, China began to have deeper understandings for the concepts of ecology, greening, and environment protection. Meanwhile, People gradually realized that the greening and landscaping of cities are the important means, which must be taken to improve cities’ecological environment. Today, along with the continuous and rapid economic development, first-tier cities of China will definitely stand and lead at the front of Chinese greening construction. Moreover, in terms of small and medium-sized cities, they will still need to keep pace with current trends and steps of city greening aiming to become green and ecologically livable cities. In this paper, it has applied and manipulated methods of literature research, field survey, interdisciplinary theoretical research and designing practice. Also, this paper is based on integrating current existing worldwide research and theories on the construction of city greening, as well as combining the domestic and foreign outstanding practical cases. According to the current city greening status and the principles of planning and landscaping, this paper takes Huaihua city as a typical and specific example to research and investigate current greening status and landscaping construction for small and medium-sized cities. The main research results and achievements are as follows:(1) Arranged and organized the development process of city greening at home and abroad, reviewed the related theories of basic research including the man-land relationship theory, the garden city theory, sustainable development theory and landscape ecology theory. Defined the main concepts of the article. Provided theoretical bases for the expansion of the article.(2) Defined the scope of the research. Clarified the general situations of development and the basic conditions of current Huaihua City. Focused on analyzing the urban eco-system, city road, urban area, township and the village green status in Huaihua.(3) Made an objective evaluation of present situation research. Put forward the advantages and restriction factors of the urban greening construction in Huaihua city. Made it easier to solve problems in Huaihua city greening construction afterwards.(4) Proposed the overall planning of urban greening of Huaihua City, put forward an urban greening integration pattern:"One core, One circle, Two rings and ten corridors, and Multiple groups". Built a green space layout for Huaihua city and provided new space for greening development and new ways for city greening construction. In addition, analyzed and focused on the planning and construction of significant projects according to the overall planning scheme, proposed measures to improve the current status, greening, and ecology recovery.These results indicate that Huaihua city’s greening is still a prominent problem in city construction. In order to resolve the city greening problem, we must highlight the key areas of the construction in the early stages of development and have a clear and realistic goal, as well as specific projects. Also, government departments’ improvement and the management system of public participation and cooperation are also indispensable for the city greening. It will vigorously promote urban greening construction in Huaihua City and change the overall city landscaping effect. Furthermore, it will improve the image and the ecological environment of the city aiming to help make Huaihua City a livable city further. Ultimately, hope this paper can play a reference role for other small and medium-sized cities in China to carry out the green-city construction.
