Auto DR(demand response) is one of the key application of smart grid. By taking administrative or inducing measures to improve energy efficiency of end-user and optimize the consumption of electricity, and to guide the user to change the long-term or short-term consumption patterns, energy savings, optimizing the allocation of resources and the security of grid can be achieved. Communication technology as a burning question is basis for interoperability of Auto DR. Auto DR requires high quality communication for participants in the system.Based on analyzing the structural relationship of the participants of Auto DR, physical model of the system architecture is proposed. Using the interoperable hierarchical thought of GWAC, the interoperation is divided into five layers, business layer, function layer, information layer, communication layer and component layer. The research and design for communication layer is basis for data communication of Auto DR, the lack of communication protocols and exchange patterns and domestic and international standards which have hindered the system automation and standardization of Auto DR.Syntactic interoperability and network interoperability are the key technologies of communication layer of Auto DR. Based on the message structure and the communication mode proposed in this paper, the basic communication services are researched including event services, reporting services, registration services, selection service and polling service, and the operation process of the communication service is described.Communication layer service is independent of the specific physical network, therefore, for the practical application, which must be mapped to the specific communication protocol. Method of Auto DR communication service mapping to XMPP were studied and analyzed, four mapping modes, transaction request/ response model, query/response mode, publish/subscribe model and polling mode are proposed. Based on this, to verify applicability of the message formats and the feasibility of mapping method, the Push mode of the communication process in the event service is completed. Thus the design and implementation work of Auto DR communication layer is achieved, and the research of Auto DR communication technology models and methods is enhanced.
