Since 1992, China has entered the aging society for more than 30 years, China is facing a major challenge of aging before wealthy. In the case of old but not rich, scholars focus on the elderly adaptable study of space. As historic districts host the memory of a city and the elderly, more attention were put on its cultural an tourist value with vigorous reforming. Nowadays, historic district whose primary function is residential faces the aging. Public space becomes a game object between tourist and the elderly.More attention should be paid to providing better public space for the elders’ public life by means of urban and architectural design.From the perspective of the elderly, through empirical research on Suzhou Pingjiang historic district of public events in the elderly, this thesis is based on the time domain of the elderly public activity and which public space can attract the elderly more. The thesis’ s purpose is try to find the special space elements summary,while try to give further advice of reforming.In the front part of this thesis, it points up the demands and clarifies that public spaces are key roles for older people in their social life of communities. Also this part studies the physical and mental characters from senior citizens. In the key chapter, it elaborates empirical research on Pinging historic district of public events in the elderly. It analyses the elderly public activity, including the following five dimensions around types of public activity, timing signature, spatial signature, facilities usage, analysis of satisfaction and needs. Through the analysis of the survey results, this thesis tries to search for existing public spaces and do not adapt to the local life of the elderly and public space physical environment factors influencing public life. In the end, it proposes further advice of reforming the public space of historical districts.This thesis has the following two aspects of innovation: ① Innovation of research perspectives. This thesis is based on the actual observations on behavior and needs of local residents from the perspective of micro view. ②Innovation of research agenda. In the context of ageing, this thesis focuses on both elderly space fitness and renovation of historical districts public space.
