With the head of urbanization, the streetlight system plays an increasingly important role in people’s life and also reflects the development level of a city. The power consumption of a city’s street lighting system is quite large. In today energy-saving and environmental protection having become the theme of the times, it is very urgent to promote the energy utilization efficiency of the streetlight system. Currently, most of the streetlight systems in our country are in manual control, and have shortcomings such as difficult management, maintenance workload and poor operational reliability. So we design a streetlight monitoring system based on power line carrier communication, which realizes remote intelligent monitoring the lights and has low cost, energy-saving, easy management and maintenance features.By analysing functional requirements and comparing existing communication technologies, the paper proposes the overall architecture solution of streetlight monitoring system, which uses three layer structures including municipal streetlight monitoring center, streetlight concentrators and streetlight control terminals. The system realizes remote data transmission between streetlight monitoring center and streetlight concentrators via Ethernet technology, and uses power line carrier communication technology to link streetlight concentrator and streetlight control terminals. Streetlight concentrator hardware includes carrier communication unit, Ethernet interface unit and the modem control unit. Streetlight control terminal hardware including carrier communication unit, each sensor module unit, drive unit and fault detection module unit. Software using modular program design ideas, designs carrier communication module, Modbus protocol module, serial data processing module, ADC sampling module and interrupt module. Then, the system fulfills streetlight concentrator monitoring the streetlight control terminal in master-slave mode. In order to applying to large-scale nodes application scenarios, the paper studies power line carrier communication routing algorithms.Finally, the paper tests the reliability of power line carrier communication and has carried experiment on street lamp monitoring system in manual and automatic modes, respectively. The experiment results show that: in automatic mode, the streetlight control terminal can accurately control streetlight turning on and off according to the data collected by the sensor and the clock chip; in manual mode, streetlight control terminal can perform the corresponding operation according to the commands sent by PC, and then change the streetlight’s status. The paper also carries out dynamic routing simulation of ant colony algorithm and simulation results show that the algorithm can find the optimal path from the source node to the destination node, and can be applied to power line carrier routing network. In summary, the streetlight monitoring system based on power line carrier communication designed by the paper can well realize control of streetlight and fulfill the mentioned requirements.
