In recent years, trip fault caused by birds has covered an increasingly high proportion as the trip fault in State Grid of Sichuan province which has become one of the major failures destroying the safe and stable operation of the power system. Although Power Sector has taken a number of bird damage prevention measures, either due to the deficiency of bird prevention, the poor choices of prevention devices of bird damage have caused worse effects in some areas with serious bird damage. Or over-defense of bird damage cause too much unnecessary economic loss. Therefore, it is necessary to establish forewarning level model of bird damage on transmission line model for guiding Power Sector that should take different measures in preventing bird damage based on different utility poles for bird damage level so as to improve utilization efficiency of preventing devices of bird damage. Meanwhile, a forewarning system for bird damage is constructed for monitoring of some high-level bird damage utility poles.By collecting and analyzing trip fault data caused by birds from State Grid of Sichuan province over the past decade, with data in the country bird hazard prone areas, it is noted that trip faults caused by birds are concerned with different seasons, different time period, geographical environment characteristics surrounding the supporting structure of transmission line and its own structure. Focusing on geographical characteristics around utility poles and utility pole structures, using the comprehensive evaluation method combined with the method of determining weighting factors, a model of bird damage forewarning on transmission lines is built, and a method of four-level bird damage classification depending on bird damage rating index is put forward.This forewarning system for bird damage sets alarms of bird damage for utility poles to 4 levels. Blue, yellow, orange, and red four different colors represent bird hazard alert level from low to high, respectively. Among them, the blue color represents the level 4 alert, and the red color represents the level 1 alert. The working flow of this system is as follows. First, the data analysis module will receive the collected data of bird damage rating index from each utility pole, and then produce birds damage alert levels. Second, the forewarning module could render the hierarchical thematic map based on birds damage alert levels, and sparkles will occur on the level 1 and level 2 birds damage alerts utility poles for the purpose of warning. Last, taking the sparkle alert utility poles as the center, the user could set the buffer radius for buffer analysis for warning the electric power department to strengthen alert warning at the areas that maybe have bird damage trip fault.
