At present, as China’s economy develops rapidly and urbanization process accelerates quickly, a silent change is taking place to the existing look of Chinese cities and towns. Due to the excessively rapid development of urban construction, most urban buildings look the same, lack of both originality and local traditional features. The original boundary between Chinese cities’ regional characteristics has gradually been blurred. The architecture, which lacks strict demonstration, has lost its original spiritual connotation. As people improve their aesthetic requirements constantly, they have made more demands on the buildings around them. Instead of only caring about whether a building itself is "good-looking", they have begun to "interpret" the building, in hope of obtaining spiritual "nutrient" from the building and resonating with it. Therefore, in the great tide of urbanization, to consider how to absorb nutrients and extract elements from Chinese traditional residences to create a distinctive building environment has become a pressing matter of the moment."Shanxi is the epitome of over-ground cultural relics". Shanxi is a province of China where the largest number of historic buildings are preserved. The architectural forms are unique and decorative patterns are exquisite, being deeply impressive. The traditional buildings of Shanxi look like stereoscopic art museums, which have not only kept Shanxi people’s cultural custom and life habit, but influenced their production and living from generation to generation. We should absorb nutrients from these excellent works, to create creative works which not only meet modern function requirements, but have traditional culture intentions. This is not only a demand for cultural regression, but a way out for us to seek for Chinese characteristic architecture. In Chapter One, this paper analyzes the research objective and significance of the subject, as well as the current application status of Shanxi’s traditional architectural elements in contemporary; in Chapter Two, the paper carries out a detailed discussion on Shanxi’s traditional architecture from the perspective of socio-cultural background and geographical distribution; in Chapter Three, the paper analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of Shanxi’s traditional architecture, and emphatically the philosophical aesthetics of Shanxi’s traditional architecture; in Chapter Four, the paper primarily analyzes the application of the aesthetic characteristics of Shanxi’s traditional architecture in modern commercial space.
