With the rapid development of social economy, as well as the acceleration of urbanization, large-scale development of the country towns and villages has led to ecological deterioration and loss of native landscape style as well, which broadens the gap of local culture. It is undeniable that local landscape, reflecting the characteristic of the local tradition, heritage and lineage, is an important foundation to achieve the sustainable development and harmonious coexistence between human and nature. Thus, this paper exerts significant effects on the research about the Sino-US comparison of small towns and rural landscape design.This paper takes the Sino-US small towns local landscape as the research object, including Lantian soup valley town in Shaanxi province, Liquan haze town, Tongchuan City, Chen furnace town, Hancheng Dang, Chongqing Ciqikou Town and United States Massachusetts Salem Town, Texas Hill town and other places and generalizes the features of the Sino-US small towns local landscape features based on research through recent investigation about rural landscape the Sino-US small towns and the excavation of geographical connotation. The comparative analysis is used in this paper to summarize the differences in terrain rural landscape features in different regions in China and America. Through field investigation, there are many problems found. For instance, many towns are lack of the construction of entrance landscape; landscape element in square is large, the form of virescence is limited; the green landscape of courtyard are lack of attention; layout and arrangement are not reasonable; trees and road landscape are under construction; different forms of settlement construction are not reasonable, settlement buildings are not coordinated with the natural environment.Relevant theories about native landscape ecology, environmental science, sociology residents’ behavior characteristic of small towns, are used to generalize the characteristics, objectives and principles of rural landscape. In addition, the main factors affecting rural landscape of small towns,(including natural environment, geographical environment, human environment, rural economy, human demand on the landscape, etc.) are detailedly analyzed. Policies of development and distribution of rural landscape of small towns are introduced after landscape patterns’ analysis and study. There are various distribution patterns namely axis layout, centralized layout, scatter layout, radial layout. Meanwhile, suggestions to the construction of landscape are also put forward in the aspects of entrance landscape, yard landscape. Besides, plant configuration and night lighting are included. This paper aims at the orderly development of small towns in rural landscape with the characters of sustainability, harmony and creation.
