In the old cities or small and medium-sized cities, there are a lot of multi- intersections. There are many differences of traffic characteristics between multi- intersection and common intersections. The present ways to govern for common intersections cannot be directly applied to multi- intersections. If these multi- intersections cannot be handled properly, not only the service level of the multi- intersections will be reduced, but are safety risks. It will also affect the traffic conditions of the entire road network. Under the premise of deep research on traffic characteristics of multi- intersections, this essay proposes a set of effective ways to the channelization and control of multi- intersections. Finally, through examples, the method is applied and in order to seek the more effective governance approach.Firstly, the paper discusses the definition and traffic characteristics of multi- intersections. Then it researches and analyzes the traffic characteristics a nd existing problem of multi- intersections, and put forward the improvement methods of geometrical condition, channelization and control design steps for multi- intersections.The paper summarizes the methods of the plane intersection channelization from lane use allocation, road exists design, internal channelization of intersection, and traffic organization of the pedestrians. According to the geometrical characteristics and traffic problems of multi- intersections, the paper puts forward three kinds of channelization ideas and methods to settle multi- intersections, and respectively discusses the advantages, disadvantages and applicable scope of these channelization methods.Then paper studied the inte rsection control modes and the selection of modes, determined the main parameters and the evaluation index of the signal control. On this basis, combined with the method of channelization that is suitable for multi- intersections. This paper proposed a control method suitable with the drainage method, and analyzed the applicable conditions of various control methods.Finally, this paper took a five-way intersection of the Taizhou city for an example, channelization and control methods proposed in this paper is applied to the improvement of the intersection, and by the used of the microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM to model and simulation to get the length of the queue and vehicle delay, calculate the capacity and saturation of the intersection. The evaluation index were analyzed and compared. The paper got the best solution for this example.
