Sustainable development is a strategic development to solve the problems of energy and environment which have become increasingly serious, including the development of economy, environment and society. Sustainable design is a designing method aiming at sustainable development, and it is a mechanism linking environment, society, economy and products designing. In the condition of energy crisis and increasing environmental contamination, it will be very important for auto industry to boost the recycling economy and sustainable development how to implement the sustainable designing in the process of auto products designing.Product designing is very important during the product’s life cycle, and it is the key point how to evaluate the product’s sustainability when it is at the design phase. This paper focuses on the research of the assessment method for sustainable development, and build up the model of the assessing system of the sustainable development to implement the sustainable design for auto products. The main contents and conclusions will be:(1) Intensively analyzing the laws and regulations at home and abroad, comparing the requirements and shortcomings of the developing process, analyzing the current sustainability for auto procuts to pave the way for sustainability assessment basing on the on-site survey for four enterprises in east China.(2) Building up the sustainability assessment model for auto products at designing phase, this is made up of economy assessment system, environment assessment system and society assessment system. Economy assessment system will be built up based on the cost budget of the auto products at designing phase. Environment assessment system will be built up based on the laws/regulations and national statistics. Society assessment system will be built up based on the comparison of assessment systems from Life Cycle Assement and Chinese Affluent Society evaluations. The sustainability assessment system of auto products will be built up based on the thress assessing systems.(3) Building up the model of sustainability assessment methods, and models for economy, environment and society factors respectively. The sustainability assessment method has been elaborated to provide the theoretical basis for quantifying the sustainability assessment.(4) Applying the built-up sustainability assessment method for auto products. The sustainability assessment method has been used to research and compare the newly-made engine and the remanufactured engine. The sustainability assessment result will be 0.3533 for the newly-made engine and 0.6471 for the remanufactured engine, and the assessing method proves to be reliable basing on the verification of the practical conditions of the engines.(5) Applying the sustainability assessment system to developing process of auto products and building up the sustainable developing process to help the designers to improve the sustainability of auto products to be manufactured. This paper has compared two designing process, process A and process B for the instrument panel manufacturing, using the built-up sustainability assessment method. The results for the two sustainable developing process are 0.5188 and 0.4812, and process A is recommended for the more sustainability.
