The ancient mountain cities play a significant role in the history of city construction in China. And their establishment and development were influenced by the natural environment and social factors. In different historical periods and under different geographical circumstances, the mountain cities present us the different patterns of spacetime evolution. This paper analyzes the factors leading to the construction of mountain cities, describes its representative stages from initial expansion to deeply development, and finally concludes the mode regarding the evolution of mountain cities and their space.China is a mountainous country. Since ancient times, many cities were distributed in the mountainous environment. The development of cities also has a close relationship to the mountainous environment, which made the spatial form of cities varied. At present, in the process of new urbanization, lots of towns located in mountainous region would be faced with the rapid expansion. However, due to the lack of enough understanding of its characteristics, the cities’ rapid expansion caused irreversible damage to the mountainous region, especially in environmental issues. In order to seek the relations among human beings, cities and mountainous regions, the theoretical study and practical exploration of construction of human settlements in mountainous regions and the city space form have become the academic and planners issue. In this study, for the Ancient Part of the Subtopic of the Study on the Spatial Pattern of Mountainous Cities in the Investigation and Study on the Spatial Pattern of mountainous cities in China. Based on the summarization of issues about the history, distribution and spatial pattern of ancient mountainous cities, this study explored the overall pattern of mountainous cities in ancient times. The time dimension of this study is from the beginning of the original human settlement activity to the year 1840, and the spatial dimension is generalized mountainous cities in our country. The article is mainly divided into the following five parts:Chapter One: introduction. Chapter one reviews the current status of mountainous cities and their related research, as well as the problems and difficulties faced in the development; analyzes the concepts of ancient mountainous cities; establishes the research framework through the literatures on the morphology of the mountainous cities.Chapter Two: the origin and development of mountainous cities in ancient China:Chapter two analyzes the historical development of mountainous cities in ancient China; reviews the history of ancient constructions according to the characteristics of the development of the cities in different periods; provides a time framework for the thesis research from the time dimension of the development of ancient mountain and mountainous cities.Chapter Three: The spatial distribution of mountainous cities in ancient China:Chapter Three analyzes the natural environment basis, ancient population migration, administrative region division, and agricultural technology conditions in mountain region. And summarizes spatial distribution of ancient mountainous cities from four aspects, the distribution of agricultural production, the amphibious transportation, resources distribution, and ancient military defense requirements.Chapter Four: Space morphology of mountainous cities in ancient China: Chapter Four classifies the cases regarding mountainous cities. Based on administrative functions, economic functions and military functions, this study plans and makes conclusion about features of mountainous cities.Chapter Five: Analysis of evolution of mountainous cities and their space. Combined with the historical development of mountainous cities, their spatial distribution and functional characteristics, this study summarizes the evolution rule of spatial pattern of ancient mountainous cities and analyzes the influence factors of ancient mountainous city development from the environment factors and social factors.Chapter Six: Conclusion for the research. |
