Yingping area, which is one of the old cities coming throughthe era of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Republic of China, and survived after all these time. This is a city rich in all cultural dimensions especially in its city-space perspective. Ying Ping area in this historical pointofviews plays a significant role on re-presenting the past.The traditional shop-front buildings along the street represent a number different styles of shop-front architecture from different periods which is a very valuable historical reference we can refer to for a better understanding of the past. There are a series of safety issues occur inside these old shop-front buildings due to the care-less maintenance on the interior through the years. The building facades are the only part of the buildings which standing still on the streetscape nowadays.The building renovations revitalize the space which was unoccupied due to thechanging of living and lifestyle.Based on the concept of support and infill derived from Open Building, this researchaims at the spatial types of building renovations. During the building revival process,the new elements will be put in that also making influence on the original spatialstructure. The objectives of this study include: 1.categorizing the building renovationmethods, 2.establishing the spatial types of renovation, 3.discussing the impact on thespatial form and physical materials.According to the increase on either functionality or substantiality, the spatial types ofrenovation could be classified into three groups: space divided, space added-on, spaceclustered. The characteristics and difference about those groups on the issues ofmechanics, esthetics, and spatial quality will be presented.
