| Sustainability and BIM are becoming ones of the most trending topics all over the world nowadays. Sustainability is a common goal in the current transport infrastructure projects and BIM is a commonly used technology. It is agreed that BIM could have the potential to greatly affect the AEC community’s ability to design, engineer, and build more sustainable buildings. Is there a link between BIM and the green performance in the transport infrastructure? The goal of the research is to create insight in the influence of BIM on the sustainability performance of the transport infrastructure projects. The potential uses of BIM to achieve environmental sustainability for the transport infrastructure are explored in this research. To reach this goal, the research is divided in literature study and theoretical analysis, interview study, mechanism designation and case study. It diagnoses the current situation and efforts of BIM adoption and sustainable development in the transport infrastructure industry. A detailed analysis of the current intersection between BIM and infrastructure, BIM and sustainability, infrastructure and sustainability, is undertaken. To garner further input on the direction of sustainability policy and BIM implementation in the transport infrastructure, in-depth interviews with professionals in relevant businesses are conducted. This research elaborates on the stakeholders’ role played in achieving the sustainability that occurs as a result of the use of BIM. Several synergies and related concepts are introduced. For the external environment design, government policies in for BIM and sustainable transportation infrastructure construction guidance is studied. "Push- pull" strategy based on BIM and sustainable government policy is designed. For the whole life cycle internal management design, to achieve the potential for utilizing BIM to achieve sustainable outcome, design(integrating with sustainable infrastructure rating system), construction(lean construction) and O&M(smart city) is presented from the perspective of various parties. Then a case of UK government and Crossrail project is investigated to validate the above research. To realise these aims, recommendations from technical, organizational and political ways are listed. The research defines the possibility and perspective of BIM adoption to influence the green project performance in the transport infrastructure. This report intends to guide and stimulate further research. |
