During 14 th,Oct,1951 to 14 th,Feb,1952, the Fair of Southern China Local and Special Products was held in Guangzhou,China. The Fair is an important social and economic event and played an important role in rebuilding the urban-rural relationship and recovering the economy of Southern China at the period of the recovery of national economy. Besides, the Fair of Southern China Local and Special Products was also the first collective design project in the new China, which led by a group of the first 2 generations of Chinese architects and the architecture design of which was taken responsible for separately. In the very short 3-month’s preparation time, the project finished the process all through from the curation plan to the construction of the 14 modern exhibition hall. Although in the later 64 years, the 14 pavilions of the Fair experienced negative criticize, and even most of them were torn down or changed in a rude way, they played an irreplaceable important part in the China modern architecture history. The study is based on the historic documents, blueprints of each venue, contracts and constructing documentation, as well as the interview of the architects who experienced the fair. This thesis for the first time systematically retrospects the Fair of Sothern China Local and Special Products in 1951, both as an architectural event and a group of modern architecture. This article divides into six chapters: Chapter 1, Review of the study of the Fair of Southern China Local and Special Products. Chapter 2, Brief introduction of the Fair and its preparation process. Chapter 3, Organization of the Fair, including the decision of "semi-permanent" exhibition halls, the choice of the site, architects and the new way of construction. Chapter 4, The study of the site planning,the 12 architects and their 14 exhibition halls’ design. Chapter 5, The subsequent influence, reviews and changes of the collective design of the fair. Chapter 6,Conclusion.Based on the former 5 chapters, the Fair of Sothern China Local and Special Products’ exhibition halls are regarded as the first collective design with the inclination of modernism in the new PRC. It remodeled the new character of architecture in Southern China as transparent, light and lucid.
