Modern architecture of China has long been shaped as the result of Western Learning. However, this belief has been challenged recently, since the Cocoonery Architecture in the Southern Jiangsu Province has been found autogenetic modernity. Moreover, as a type of local industrial building, it has innovatively developed an integrative design on environmental adaptability, which implies hybridity of regional and modern technologies. In the context of contemporary architectural discourse, this study on Cocoonery Architecture endeavors to offer retrospection on Chinese Modernism as well as introspection of contemporary sustainable architectural design. The Cocoonery Architecture has been specialized for silkworm breeding during the Republic of China era, and has developed into a building type in later decades. The development of Cocoonery Architecture are driven by breeding process, environmental requirement and modern technologies, through the improvement of spatial structure, systemized surface and construction system respectively. Thus, the modernization of the Cocoonery Architecture is based on the balance and complex of the multi-purpose building systems.Based on fieldwork, this study will set up a database for representative cocoonery buildings of modern China in the Southern Jiangsu Province and give a documentary account of the spatial, multi-surface and tectonic characteristics of this group of buildings. Further, this paper will look into the crucial influences from social transformation and technological development, to account for the generation of Cocoonery Architecture, which is formed by the combination of three systems:spatial structure shaped by breeding process, systemized surface demanded by environmental requirement and construction system facilitated by regional and modern technologies. This study endeavors to look for the prototype and summarize the law of variation by reducing the three systems. The typology of Cocoonery Architecture is characterized by the assemblage of multi-purpose building systems, rather than constitution of elements. Thus, this study purpose a new typological method to describe Cocoonery Architecture and a probable approach for typological study. The whole thesis contains about 45000 words,95 pictures and charts.
