The crankshaft, camshaft is the key part of the internal combustion engine, the quality of it is one of the main factors influencing the performances of internal combustion engine. Because of the crankshaft and camshaft are special-shaped shaft, its quality requires specialized measuring instrument to detect. The development of the crankshaft and camshaft measuring instruments involved in automation, control engineering, information processing, machinery and other multi-disciplinary field. Advanced mature products of measuring crankshaft and camshaft are still lacked in the current domestic. This paper focuses on the development difficulties of the crankshaft and camshaft measuring instrument and carries out the key technology research while design of measuring instrument machine, analysis and compensation of measurement error, methods of data processing and error evaluation, measurement software development included.According to the functional requirement of the comprehensive measuring instrument and the characteristics of the measured object, the design of measuring machine measurement scheme and analysis of instrument structure are implemented. On the basis, the movement of the measuring instrument system and the typical key components are studied before the selection and layout of senor are carried out then. The whole design of the crankshaft and camshaft measuring instrument finally completed through the design and integration of the data acquisition system.According to the measuring instrument machine structure and measurement scheme design, the instrument error and theory error during measuring are analyzed. The causes and characteristics of flotation carriage tilt error, the instrument error caused by inaccurate of the axial rotation and Abbe error are analyzed in detail to work out an effective error compensation method. The separation and compensation of system error are realized by establishing of error compensation model.After eliminating the measurement error, the filter process has been adopted to the data. On the basis of national standards and industry standards of shaft part’s error evaluation, error evaluation mathematical model are researched between camshaft and crankshaft to complete the error evaluation algorithm which integrated into software by the form of the COM component.Based on the above research results, the Lab VIEW selected as the software developing platform to accomplish the functional analysis and architecture design. The database technology, communication technology and multi-thread technique are imported during the development of measurement software. The software provides a friendly human machine interface for the whole measuring process, normalizes input parameters and output data form and can program the measurement process for realized mass measurement, all that promoted this software can realize the crankshaft and camshaft geometric error measurement and evaluation.
