42 V integrated starter generator (ISG) based on permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM), a power cinverter will replace the starter and the generator, is installed between the engine and the transmission. It starts up the engine almost much faster than any conventional starter and produces electric power with grater efficiency than conventional generator.A new magnetic structure for the ISG based on PMSM was designed; Analytical formulas of some improtant peformance requirements of the ISG based on PMSM, such as air-gap magnetic flux density, no-load induction electromotive force, magnetic field of the armature reaction and inductance parameters, were introduced.Based on the electromagnetic estimate, experience formulas and the vector chart, the struture and dimensions of permanent magnent, stator, rotor and windings of the ISG were obtained, and structure and dimensions were optimized using the analytical formulas. Using the method of finite element analysis based on Ansoft Maxwell 2D, models of magnetic field and transient magnetic field of ISG based on PMSM were developed, through calculating the self-inductance, the mutual-inductance of the armature winding and the no-load induced electromotive force under the rated speed, the parameters of winding was determined; In order to reduce the magnetic flux leakage and improve the efficiency of ISG, the influence factors of the air-gap magnetic field were analyed.A controller of 42V ISG based on PMSM was designed, which is divided into three parts: the controller of starter, the controller of generator and the controller of conversion between the starter and generator, simulation of the controller has been done by the Mutisim 10, the results show that the design of controller was reasonable.A prototype of 42 ISG based on PMSM was developed, the results of testing showed that: it could start up the engine and produced electric power, locked-rotor torque was greater than 35Nm; the voltage of the 42V ISG changed from 41.6V to 42.3V when the speed changed from 1500r/min to 2400r/min and the load changed from 0 to 540W, achieved the technical requirements.
