Snow load is one of the important factors that destroy the light steel structure, a lot of safety problems have been exposed on light steel structure in the past snow disaster. The damage, on one hand, is due to the insufficient in bearing capacity of the structure. On another hand, is caused by the deficient in stiffness of structure caused by non-uniform snow load. Therefore, it has an important engineering practical value to study the performance of light steel structure under non-uniform snow load.Based on the engineering practice of a light gantry frame factory, the finite element models of the portal steel building are been built and analyzed by ABAQUS under different static loading conditions. The parameters are roof pitches α, and the value of snow load from different standards. The stress and strain development tendency of the members for the portal steel building is obtained under non-uniform snow load condition. Influence which caused by the loading to the structure safety are analyzed, in order to find and evaluate the hedge measures.From this paper, it can be concluded that:(1)The end stress of roof beam for the steel structure under non-uniform snow load condition are higher when compared with those under uniform snow load condition, especially among the double-slope roof structure with the slope of 5° to 30°.(2)The lateral displacements of columns for the steel structure under non-uniform snow load condition are higher when compared with those under uniform snow load condition. In addition, the situation becomes more obvious with the decreased of the catching rate of roof.(3)The vertical displacement of roof boarding and purline for the steel structure under non-uniform snow load condition are higher when compared with those under uniform snow load condition. And the position of the maximum vertical displacement became changes to the two sides of windward side.(4)The stress and deformation will get lower by strengthening and incorporating the dissipative member in the structure. Further more, the measure of adding dissipative member appeared more economic, energy conservation and environmental protection.In accordance with the above rules, we can control disaster extent of damage to a great extent, economic benefit is remarkable. It is significant economic benefits and reference guide to the future of engineering practice.
