Characteristics And Methods Of Traffic Planning In Small City

With the rapid development of national economy and urban construction of China, the increasing intensity of land development and scale of urban architectures bring huge pressure to the urban transportation system. In the process of urbanization in China, due to the level of city and economic development, the traffic problem of small city does not intensify the contradictions and lead to more serious social consequences. Thus, focusing on developing the small and medium-sized cities and establishing the traffic planning system which can be suitable for the present characteristics of small cities in China is an important aspect to solve the problem of urban traffic and also an effective method to realize city traffic sustainable development.Takes Yanggu county in Shandong province of China as an example. Through analyzing the present situations of nature, economic and urban traffic of the Yanggu county, this paper analyzes the traffic characteristics of small cities from various aspects (i.e., the characteristics of land use, road network and the characteristics of mixed traffic flow, public transportation, parking facilities and other several aspects). Then, using adaptive traffic planning method of the small city to study the traffic planning system for small cities, from the perspective of the traffic investigation and present situation analysis, the traffic demand forecast, the development pattern of small cities, etc. Above all, traffic sustainable development concept is used to guide the development of small cities.This paper mainly includes six chapters. The first part clarifies the background and significances of this study from the perspective of urban traffic problem and planning method of small cities, and illustrates the city traffic system planning theory and construction experience, etc., at home and abroad. The second part defines the small city from the aspect of the traffic and then concludes the traffic characteristics of small cities based on the current traffic situations of Yanggu county in Shandong Province of China. The third part discusses the specific contents of trip survey for small cities. Through the trip survey of Yanggu county, this part also analyzes the travel characteristics of residents in small cities from the aspects of travel intensity, travel purpose, travel method and time distribution, etc. The fourth part chooses suitable travel demand forecast method for small city traffic planning to forecast the travel demand of Yanggu county and then distributes the predicted traffic flows to the specific road network. Accordingly, the traffic quality of the distributed traffic flows is evaluated. The fifth part proposes the concept of traffic sustainable development to guide the development of small cities based on the traffic characteristics of small cities. In addition, this part also discussed the strategies of future traffic development for Yanggu county from the perspective of road network, passenger transport system, parking facilities, transportation system management, etc. Finally, in the last part, the research conclusions and some insufficiencies of this paper are summarized, and this part also makes a discussion of the future traffic development of small cities.
