With the continuous improvement of living standard, people’s demands become more and more diversified. Product innovation has gradually become the focus of enterprise competition. Many existing product innovation methods can provide innovative ideas. However, most of them are difficult to be implemented using computers. Designers have to consider various characteristics of the product and the relationships between them using the human brain. As a result, only limited number of product innovation schemes can be generated. Moreover, the design efficiency is low and it is hard to quantitatively evaluate the generated schemes.Extenics is a new discipline, which studies rules and methods of matters’expansion and transformation with formalized methods, and is used for innovation and solving the contradictory problems. Extenics provides three creative methods for the product innovation. Among them, the third creative method (TCM) aims to generate new design schemes by performing extensible analysis and the corresponding extension transformations on the existing products based on their defects,, and select superior schemes using the superiority evaluation method.In order to better implement product innovation using the computers, in this paper, combining the latest extension theories and methods, TCM is deeply studied, forming a novel method that is more maneuverable and is able to generate more effective innovation schemes. Finally, an improved third creation method (ITCM) based product extension innovation is implemented using Java and MySQL. Concept design of a rubbish bin is taken as an example to verify the feasibility of the proposed method.The innovations of this paper are described as follows:(1) Correlation analysis is added to the extensible analysis part of using TCM for product innovation. Firstly, First of all, various correlation relationships in the product are analyzed, paving a way for the conduction transformations. Conductive transformations are considered in the extension transformation part. According to the results of correlation analysis, conductive transformations are performed, ensuring the rationality of product innovation.(2) In part of superiority evaluation, social indicators, economic indicators and technical indicators are definitely defined and measuring indicators are further’ divided, making the measuring indicator system more standardized and specific, and then forming the multi-level superiority evaluating system structure.(3) In this paper, superiority evaluation method is applied in the process of the extension transformation, and correspondingly a detailed algorithm design is made, ensuring the validity and enforceability of the generated product innovation schemes. Research results show that the proposed innovation software can efficiently implement product innovation, and can make a comprehensive comparison of various product innovation schemes, providing a systematical product innovation tool for the designers.
