Travel efficiency is low in cities with more traffic congestion, and citizens’demand is more high-quality and diverse while current public bus service is low-quality nowadays. Then, the efficient, comfortable, and convenient customized bus service appears in our vision. As a new traffic mode, study on customized bus service is relatively insufficient. By operation analysis, traveler demand survey, traveler demand analysis, station and line demand analysis, case study and validation of Chengdu, this paper gives scientific and feasible method for the planning and operation of customized bus service.This paper gives the definition of customized bus service first, analyzes its characteristics and development, and proposes operation, planning process and expanded application. By choosing relevant factors and attribute levels and using orthogonal designing, Stated Preference survey is conducted to analyze traveler demand. Based on the survey, this paper design MNL model and calibrate its parameters, then the key factors affecting transportation choice is analyzed. The selection probability of customized bus service and the sensitivity of factors are analyzed to study demand of customized bus service.Considering the characteristics of customized bus service, principles of lines and stations setting, and the operation and planning process, this paper proposes applicable setting methods. Then the station and line optimization model is built, which select benefit and passenger load factor as optimization objectives and select certain constraints. Genetic algorithm is used to solve this model, so as to get price, vehicle type and quantities settings to meet the demand of customized bus service.This paper uses data of Chengdu to analyze travel time and space demand. Based on the study of traveler demand, line and station optimization, this paper get results of feasible route, stations and services configuration. Comparison with the actual operation shows the method and data in this paper is effective. At the same time, reasonable set of customized bus service, effective control of fares, and satisfied services can help to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of customized bus service.
