In recent years, a large number of underwater highway tunnels with large cross section have been built in China. It can effectively solve the problem of traffic restriction by river and channel, at the same time greatly ease the pressure of urban traffic. Because of the special structure and relative independence of tunnels, it will cause serious human casualties, property loss and negative social impact in case of emergency situations. As one of the evacuation way to underwater highway tunnel, the vertical evacuated pass is the main path for people when emergency occurs. However, it is seriously short of data and theory research on the traffic capacity and human evacuation behavior for a long time, which cause some doubts for people’s recognition for vertical evacuated pass. Therefore, it has great significance to research on human evacuation behavior and traffic capacity of vertical evacuated pass in underwater highway tunnels.Based on the Qianjiang highway tunnel, this paper took the way of engineering research, theoretical analysis, field experiments and numerical simulation, carried out experiments of highway tunnel vertical evacuation(stairs, slides). The main results and achievements were as follows:(1) The human evacuation characteristics in highway tunnel have been discussed. Through analyzing the current research, summarized the highway tunnel evacuation mode at domestic and abroad;(2) Based on Qianjiang highway tunnel, a series of experiments have been done. This paper analyzed the evacuation process and got the characteristic parameters such as personnel interval time, the time of evacuation, traffic capacity under the situation of different evacuation channels.(3) Through the test which combined staircase and slide, analyzed people’s choice to staircase and slide under the different condition, get the results of the slide traffic capacity, the channel occupancy time as well as parameters, and make the contrast to the simple condition test finally draw the main conclusion.(4) This paper carried out the numerical simulation by Pathfinder software, analyzed the evacuation time under different personnel load density, and gives some effective suggestions.
