With the implementation and further deepening of China ’ s develop-the-west strategy, the question in respect of conservation, renovation and development of the traditional settlements of the minority nationalities and vernacular architecture has recently turned into a hotspot issue within the architecture world. The Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, in Yunnan, due to its advantageous geographic location and natural landscape, as well as the diversity and distinctiveness of local minority nationalities, has shaped a great many of traditional settlements and vernacular architectures which are characterized by national and regional features. This dissertation, based on the example of Pukawang Village the traditional genre of Dulong nationality in Nujiang prefecture, discussed the characteristics of the traditional settlements and vernacular architectures, relying on various methodologies such as documentations and references collection, field researches and studies and spatial shape analysis etc.. Also, in terms of particular principle in residence of conservation and development, it suggested and proposed the design object of ‘ Ancient Yunan Settlement- Dulong folklore Region’, for practices of planning and architecture design, and further explored the way of conservation and development of the local constructions from both theoretical and practical perspectives.Firstly, on the basis of the studies with respect of three theories: vernacular architecture, architectural typology and tectonic culture, in combination of Pukawang ’ s natural geography environments, this research will summary the formation backgrounds of traditional settlements. The village’s integral pattern and spatial form will also be confirmed through field researches and analysis. Meanwhile, in terms of the integral study of the village, for the final aim of outlining implicit constructional logic of vernacular architectures and locally dwelling universality, this research further probe into the historical backgrounds, humanistic backgrounds and religious backgrounds of local traditional vernacular architectures; and will conduct systematic research and induction on the floor plans, structural forms and construction materials relying on fieldworks and investigations. Through such work and understanding, what mentioned above could form the fundamentals of the next step for our research: in-depth exploration of conservation and development of Pukawang’s traditional architectures.Secondly, the results revealed by field researches and interviews raise a series of questionsregarding the conservation and developments of the local settlements and vernacular architectures. To overcome such issue, this research proposes several instructional principles under humanity backgrounds, by using domestic successful cases: integrity, developing, exhibition, utilitarian.Lastly, with the principle of conservation and development as the theoretical instruction, this research will help to conduct planning and designs of the actual construction project ‘ Ancient Yunan Settlement- Dulong folklore Region’, as well as the concrete practice work. By combining both theories and practices, it will seek and explore one appropriate way for conservation and development of traditional settlements and vernacular architectures in the Nujiang prefecture. The expectation of the author lies in delivering more insights and references for future study on the conservation and development of the traditional settlements for minorities nationalities.
