As a key equipment in railway switch, the working condition of switch machine is directly relates to the railway transport efficiency and traffic safety. With the continuous improvement of train traffic speed and traffic density, Switch machine faces the increasing velocity and load impact.In order to ensure the safe operation of trains, the real-time detection to the railway switch machine’s running state is becoming more and more important. Aiming at the existing problems of switch machine gap detection methods, the paper presents a gap detection system based on power line carrier communication after the integration of power line carrier communication, digital image processing, embedded intelligent equipment, the reliability of the system, and realizes the real-time detection of switch machine.The paper not only introduces the work principle and basic function of this gap detection system based on power line carrier communication, but also presents the overall design plan, and determines to make use of ARM processor and embedded Linux operating system to achieve high reliability processing device of gap detection.According to the design plan, the author designed the hardware platform of gap detection processor and introduced the hardware circuit principle of each module in detail firstly. Then built the software platform of gap detection processor, and presented the development environment and debugging platform of gap detection processor, and introduced the building process of embedded Linux operating system, and analyzed the optimization and cutting process of the Linux kernel, above this, the author completed the making of the root file system based on Busybox. Finally, the driver of the gap detection processing device was designed, through the use of design patterns of a character device driver, the author completed the temperature and humidity trial, as well as the development and transplantation of current signal acquisition-driven.The paper describes the detection principle of two new type electric switch machine, that are S700K and ZDJ9. According to practical engineering application, the author presents the projection method and improved LSD method, and introduces the realizing process of these two kinds of detection algorithm in detail. The average detection error of the two algorithms are less than 0.1mm, and the average detection time is less than 350ms, through the comparison and analysis of the two algorithms, the author finds projection method is more suitable for ZDJ9 electric switch machine, and the improved LSD detection algorithm can satisfy the requirements of S700K detection well.After the development of prototype system and the combination of the high reliability requirements of railway product, the author analyzed and tested the system’s reliability from hardware and software aspects, such as high and low temperature, static discharge, pulse group, surge and so on, in the same time, the author gave the solution about the problems in the testing process. The actual test results shows, the system can well meet the reliability requirements of railway products.
