Regional mountain water landscape system includes natural environment, artificial environment, and the cultural connotations. With the rapid urbanization, the analysis of regional mountain water landscape system from the perceptive of landscape architecture, and the understanding of the relationship between city and its environment, can lead some guidance for the development of modern city.This paper uses ancient Suzhou as an example, and analyzes its regional mountain water landscape system from three aspects:(1) its component factors and spatial layout; (2) its affection on the development of city; (3) its inheritance and development in contemporary urban planning.Firstly, based on the relative conceptions and theories, this paper extracts four factors from the ancient Suzhou regional mountain water landscape system:(1) the original environment;(2) the river system;(3) the irrigation conservancy;(4) the cultural landscapes. These factors coordinate with each other and form the regional spatial characteristics as ’use regional river system as basic skeleton, ancient city and west mountains as cores, embedding with cultural landscapes’.Secondly, based on the components and space layout of regional mountain water landscape system, this paper concludes four main impacts on the city by the regional mountain water landscape system, which are:(1) maintaining urban development; (2) promoting urban expansion; (3) guiding the sight direction; (4) promoting landscape gardens’ construction.Last but not least, this paper evaluates the inheritance and development of the ancient Suzhou regional mountain water landscape system on contemporary urban planning. This paper suggests that urban planning should be considered from regional perspective, and combine both city and its environment. Meanwhile, we should protect natural landscape pattern, and inherit the historic culture with regional city landscape. This paper attempts to provide some references for contemporary urban planning.
