Traction substation is an important part of the traction power supply system, which transforms the three phase voltage in power system to single phase voltage for electric locomotive by using traction transformer. The safety and reliability of traction substation operation is significant to the whole traction power supply system. Since the running traction substation is in high pressure voltage and electrical equipment in it are expensive, it is unsafe for operators on duty to operate equipment in reality. In addition, traditional training methods are mainly based on materials, videos, site visits and so on, which greatly limits the intuition and operability. In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) simulation technology is introduced into the traction substation training research, which makes it significant for engineering application.The function and scalability requirements of three-dimensional traction substation training simulation system are firstly analyzed in detail, starting from the routine regulations and standard operating procedures of traction substation. Then, the research direction and contents are determined based on the analysis below.3D models are used to construct virtual scene of traction substation with sense of reality. Operating process simulation mode with versatility is realized by designing script resolution mechanisms. Finally, the daily operations in traction substation are simulated through 3D simulation system. In this paper,3ds Max and Unity engine are chosen for the design and development of 3D training simulation system for traction substation.In the study of 3D training simulation system for traction substation, the function and scalability requirements are firstly taken into consideration, in accordance with the design ideas of modularization and structuration, the soft architecture is designed with three layers: data resources layer, system implementation layer and interface interaction layer, which achieves the separation among underlying resource, module implementation and user interaction. Then, some related technologies about the system development are introduced. The scene simulation of traction substation is organized in tree structure. Design models, textures and animations of scene composition are established such as primary equipment, secondary equipment, scene environments, virtual characters and operation tools. During the design process, due to the full consideration for local details of each model and points and attentions in modeling, the 3D models have appropriate levels of details with high sense of reality. As for terrain simulation, the dynamic scheduling algorithm is constructed based on the perspective position, which can spare computer memory resource occupation for large terrain simulation. And for interface design, the program operating mechanisms and habits in user operation are fully considered by dynamical reading database. Then design the multi-scene and multi-task program interface, which adopts asynchronous loading mechanism that can effectively implement the scene loading transition. The whole interface design is diverse and transitions between different interfaces go cohesively and naturally. In training task simulation, the standard operating processes are analyzed step by step. For king steps, programming languages parsing mechanism is used for design, which can simulate the actual operation business by task database. Moreover, collision detection is employed in virtual character control to improve the realism of scene roaming. In animation management, animation state machine is designed to set equipment’ initial animation state; and simulate the linkage between different animation states among different equipment via animation association. Finally, the 3D training simulation system for traction substation is also released on immersive virtual reality platform after achieving its design and development, which provides new ideas for industry application with its high degree of immersion and realistic somatosensory interactive mode.In this paper, the virtual scene roaming, equipment cognitive learning, standard operation simulation, training assessment and some other training functions can be simulated in 3D training simulation system for traction substation. This system offers a new method for substation duty training and it has practical significance for engineering with its advantages, such as the low cost, high sense of reality and safety in operation.
