With the rapid development of our national economy, the requirements to the reliability of power supply and the quality of service have been more and more rigorous. The contradiction gradually exposes between nearly exhausted non-renewable resources and the sustainable development of our national economy. It is difficult to meet the requirements for the development of modern economic society with existing management measures of power network operation. Therefore, it is essential to realize the development of electric power system automation not only at the macropolicy level but also from the perspective of energy strategy.The distribution network, although low-voltage, is the basic power network and it’s directly facing the power customers to provide quality service. Any distribution network fault will give bad impact to power customers and even cause political events. Industrial developed countries have been actively promoted the development of distribution automation, some domestic research institutes and universities have launched a lot of work in related fields. Automation of power distribution network, through real-time monitoring, can optimize the network operation mode, shorten maintenance time, and strengthen the management of distribution network itself. The real-time monitoring of distribution network can fully embody the application of modern computer technology and communication technology in reconstruction and construction of distribution network. It can play an inestimable role not only in realizing the intelligence,the efficiency and environmental protection of power grid, but also in improving the power supply reliability and service quality.Based on the analysis of the development of domestic and international distribution network automation technology, the paper makes research into the requirements of distribution automation technology. Starting with the studies of distribution network structure in Yuanzhou District, it analyzes the status of equipment, the status quo of communication system, respective goals for automation construction. Then it illustrates the optimization of the network structure, the renovation of equipment, the design of the master station and the terminal system, feeder automation, and information communication bus construction involved in the construction objectives. Proposing a overall design scheme of distribution automation, the papaer expounds both its hardware and software architecture. And on this basis it gives a comprehensive analysis of the economic, managerial and social benefits brought by the completion of distribution automation in Yuanzhou District.
