Since introduced from India into China in Han Dynasty, Buddhism has played a prominent role in human society where it takes on the duties to civilize people and exert an affect for good life. While Buddhism gradually becomes an crucial part of traditional Chinese culture, Chinese Buddhism has completed the localization at the same time. In this new phase of C hinas economy, Chinese Buddhist temples have mushroomed along with the diversified needs in function. In recent years, numerous temples are under construction and the religious tourism is getting more and more prosperous. As a result, people begin to pay attention to Buddhist culture again. This research is due to the opportunity to participate in the design of Xiangtangshan Buddhist Temple and I have the chance to explore the practice of modern Buddhist temple. During the process of data collection and case study, I found that the layout and spatial organization of Buddhist temple have not been thoroughly studied. Domestic temples are suffering from a series of problems-excessive momentum, confusing layout and lack of religious spirit, which all result in a loss of traditional Chinese architectural features and spatial organization. Therefore, the research attempts to analyze the evolution history of the layout of Chinese Buddhist temples and combine the evolution with the influence of traditional culture in order to explore the spatial organization of temple.Chapter I is the introduction.Chapter II focuses on the layout of C hinese Buddhist temples, including the generalization of the evolution of form of Chinese Buddhist temples, the cause and factors and classification of the layout.Chapter III explores the spatial organization of Buddhist temple respectively from space sequence, the combination with surrounding environment and the space of modern Buddhist temple. Besides, through the systematic study of several cases of modern Buddhist temple, the diversified demand is discussed.Chapter IV and V introduce an architectural practice that the author participated from October 2014 to May 2015.
