With the rapid development of Chinese urban economy and automobile industry, the fleet of urban cars is expending constantly, which cause a heavier pressure to the static traffic. However, the less advanced construction of urban parking facilities leads to a growing serious status of the urban parking problem. Considering the lack of space in cities, transferring the garage underground has become a common way to cope with the situation. The obvious advantages in both economy and efficiency of underground parking garage have already leaded a profound impact on urban static traffic. At the same time, with the increase amount of garage construction, the convenience, suitability and other aspects of underground garage space design has raised more and more attention.Combined with the new norms of ‘garage building design’ JGJ100-2015, ‘garage, repair garage, parking for fire protection design specifications’ GB50067-2014, this paper took analysis and comparison on issues related to ordinary underground garage ramp, double underground garage and automatic underground garage.For ordinary underground garage ramp and double underground garage, the research focused on parking space design, parking unit design, expended to parking strategy, and took analysis and comparison by parking efficiency; For automatic underground garage, this article analyzed different types of machinery and equipment, summarized their operation modes, features and application scenarios respectively, to provide a reference for choosing equipment and machinery of automatic underground garage; Furthermore, based on a simple urban underground garage idealized model, a comparison work of the quantified efficiency and economy of the parking strategies between ordinary underground garage ramp and double underground parking garage have been taken, which shown that a further illustrates of mechanical parking garage in cities with good prospects for development. Meanwhile, this paper concluded and analyzed existing underground garage space design methods, mainly studied on ordinary underground garage ramp and double underground garage, to explore the optimal design and ease of suitability method of underground garage space.Combined with engineering practice of underground garage parking strategy and spatial design approach, the project of Tang Yan Road civil air defense underground mall garage is shown as an example. To apply the research to practical engineering, the research of parking strategies and spatial design have been used to analyze existing problems in this project and its updating and reforming by conduct field research. According to existing national standards and the situation of urban cars, this paper searched for optimal, updating, transforming ideas and practical measures to improve its space utilization and the function of the garage to meet the evolving needs. Meanwhile, it may also provide useful experience for similar projects.Although the comparison work in this paper often refers to an idealized model, and inevitably ignored some potential non-critical factors, its conclusions in corresponding using still do not lose the applicability. Through the research work of this paper, I hope to provide references and optimized design ideas for the selection of the parking area and parking strategy; and try to provide more comprehensive design methods and examples for reference for underground garage space design optimization from the view of architectural design.
