Recently, with the continuous development of informationization technology, the production efficiency in manufacture and electronics industry has been widely promoted. Likewise, as a pillar industry in China, the construction industry is also promoting its level of informationization by learning and applying BIM. BIM, short for "Building Information Modeling", which is a 3D-based architectural design concept, has a powerful capacity for comprehensive information management. But it still lacks a lot experience to apply BIM in interchange engineering. So, the BIM technology was combined with the interchange engineering this paper, focusing on BIM’s application in the design stage of interchange.It was introduced about the basic concept of BIM, as well as its application status in construction industry. Then, according to the specific engineering characteristics of interchange, the BIM technology was contrasted with the traditional 2D design software (DICAD) in seven aspects:hardware requirements, technology platform, specific functions, and etc. Furthermore, it was indicated about the transformation of the design procedure in interchange engineering, caused by BIM.Based on Autodesk BIM platform, it was deeply studied about the BIM’s application in the design stage of interchange. As a result, a complete BIM-based design system of interchange was put forward. Besides, its advantages and disadvantages were analyzed. In addition, a BIM model of an actual interchange project was established, with the two difficulties about BIM’s using on complex alignment design and end forming figured out.The application of BIM model of the present stage was also explored, including collision check, earthwork calculation and allocation, sight distance analysis, cost control, and construction simulation.
