Intelligent design is an effective way to improve the product design automation and intelligence level, and it is also one of the key technologies of mass customization manufacturing, agile manufacturing and intelligent manufacturing. Case-based design(CBD) is an important way to achieve intelligent design, which is aimed at using existing products to design new products. Because of the diversity and complexity of mechanical product structure, this method is difficult to achieve searching and modifying similar examples and estimating cost. This paper takes the product gene which describes the structural properties and manufacturing properties of complex products as the breakthrough point, builds architecture for intelligent design and cost estimation of complex products. The content of this paper is carried out in the following aspects:First of all, on the basis of the limits of the CBD method and the existing problems of concurrent cost estimation, product genetic parameter is proposed for product intelligent design and cost estimation, which is divided into two parts: structure and manufacturing parameters of product components, and uses the object-oriented method to express the genetic parameters, on the basis, builds architecture for intelligent design and cost estimation of complex products.Secondly, uses Neural Network method excavates the relationship between function parameters and genetic parameters、genetic parameters and part parameters, and takes genetic parameters of structural as the basis for searching the similar examples, uses weighted distance method described similarities between products, to achieve the similar case search., and carrying out the adaptive modification by the relationship between the genetic parameter and the parameter of the parts.Thirdly, takes the genetic parameters in the processing and manufacturing as the basis for the estimation of cost, using neural network establishes the relationship between the genetic parameters and costs to achieve cost estimation.Finally, takes the plate chain bucket elevator as example, using Basic Visual programming tool and Access database tool to develop the intelligent design and cost estimation system for bucket elevator, achieving the automation and intelligence of the design process of bucket elevator.
