In the past, the design of product appearanc e was mainly reliant on the creative mind of the designer. The designer must develop a knowledge system of some depth and width so as to create a good design. The designer thinking should combine the emotion and the reason. With the aid of the computer fea tured by the powerful calculating and graphic design ability, the designer can design the product appearance in a more efficient manner. It can not only enrich the form of product design but also turn the custom-made design into a possibility. In order to satisfy the diverse emotional needs of those users, this paper will simulate the initial design and detailed design for the design thinking. The innovative approach to designing the product appearance which is based on the cellular genetic algorithm and st andard genetic algorithm has been proposed. The main content of this research is presented as follows.(1)From the perspective of cognitive psychology, the product sample will be collected. The product sample for reference will be also gathered accordi ng to Kansei engineering. Through designer focus and user survey, the evaluation value of the sample will be also gained. The representative product sample will be determined. By means of form analysis, the design elements will be gained and parameterized.(2)Based on the corresponding relationship between design process, designer thinking mode, design strategy and cellular genetic algorithm, the designer has built the innovative and initial design system through the cellular genetic algorithm. The representative product samples have been viewed as the initial population. It can realize the intelligent design of many creative schemes through a small quantity of prototypes. The initial design process for the design thinking will be also simulated.(3)Based on the corresponding relationship between designer thinking and standard genetic algorithm, the designer has built an innovative and detailed design system based on the genetic algorithm, further optimizing the scheme for the initial design system. Through the single-parent genetic algorithm, the initial population will be gained. The innovative design scheme will be created through the genetic operation. The process of detailed design for the design thinking will be also simulated. With the cartoon expression used as the case for innovative design, this paper has also verified the effectiveness and practicability of the method.This paper takes product style as research object, firstly, it proposed the integrated procedure of product style creative design according to cognitive thinking and evolutionary algorithms; secondly, analyzed the relationship between product form and function as well as imagery; then built a cellular genetic algorithm based original system of product style creative design through simulating initial design process; finally, simulated detailed design process and proposed standard genetic algorithm based detailed system of product style creative design, meanwhile, it carried on verification to research case of cartoon expressio n style by evolutionary design system which based on Matlab development. The results showed that it is effective to the application of product style creative design based on evolutionary algorithms.
