Embedded system is a special computer system which is based on computer’s technology and application, it is variable for the hardware and software, and it’s reliability,cost cubage and power consumption are very strict. The Energy Remote Terminal Unit is an important component of the energy metering and billing automation system.This paper described in detail on the ideas of embedded system development which is based on the ARM microprocessor S3C2410,and also introduced the way to apply them to the design of hardware and system software for the electric energy remote terminal platform.Firstly, this paper introduced the architectural overview of the ARM microprocessor, characteristic and the principles of selecting microprocessors. Secondly, it described the research of embedded system based on ARM MCU S3C2410, which includes the minim and peripheral system for ERTU platform-this idea can also be used for other embedded system. At last, this paper presented detailed development of the embedded system’s start-up code, Linux device driver code for the ERTU platform.The system implemented data storage and transmission,LCD human machine interface,and other basic functions. As a basic platform, through the whole design,it’s considerable sufficiently of practicability, modularization, in the design of hardware and general rule, expansibility and portability in the design of software.Therefore, configured with variable application software, it can be used for both electric energy remote terminal platforms and other embedded applications.The ERTU platform in this paper is provided with wide use, low cost, friendly interface, easy maintenance. It’s widely used in the electric market and proved it’s reliability.
