Firstly, an analysis of the current braking system was made in this paper, and we could get the work of the retarder requirements from the conclusions of the law comparison between the domestic and foreign. After comparing the electronically controlled mechanical retarder, we would know its advantage. After analysis the braking performance and the evaluation index system of the vehicle, we established the vehicle dynamic equation after assembling the retarder, and got the curve of the braking force distribution. We described the changes of the braking performance before and after the assembly. After analysis the structure and braking performance of the new type of retarder, we derived the formula of the braking torque, the braking efficiency and the temperature rise of the drum. After finishing the design of the structure of the retarder, we calculated the braking efficiency, the friction characteristics of the friction linings and the heat capacity to testify that the performance of the new style of retarder could satisfy the national standard.The assembly relations are shown in the CAD model established according to the structure parameters of the new style of retarder. The dynamic model is built on the basis of CAD models. The simulation of the braking process is done in ADAMS. The simulation results are compared with the practical computation to testify the model’s correction. The key components such as the worm shaft and the support pin are analyzed in the FEM. The analysis result shows the strength reliability of the worm shaft and the support pin.The intelligent control theory of the electronically controlled mechanical retarder is shown and the work process of the retarder is described for the design of the control programmer.The design of the new style is the key point in the study. The design, the braking performance and the control of the retarder are realized initially. This paper has practical sense on the industrialization of the new style of retarder.
