Job burnout refers to an employee’s passive attitudes towards his work due to prolonged struggle with emotional or interpersonal stresses in his career, especially in service industry. Reflcted in his work, emotional exhaustion, dehumanization or depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment are some of the characteristic symptons. In recent years, with social progress and economic development, competition from all walks of life becomes increasingly fierce. Job burnout prevails in the workplace and Customs has no exception. As the state organ responsible for supervision and control over everything entering and leaving the Customs territory, Customs is entrusted with the important duty of exercising supervision and control, collectting Customs duties and other taxes and fees, uncovering and suppressing smuggling, working out Customs statistics and handling other Customs operations. It is her great mission to safeguard state sovereignty and interests, and maintain the normal order of foreign trade. Job burnout among Customs officers not only affacts their physical and mental health, but also influences the overall performance of Customs, thus hinders the full play of customs administrative functions and brings great loss to the state.Job burnout is neither a physical or mental disease, nor is it due to ideological and moral unconsciousness, but a psychological distress or mental disorder. However, over the years, we have been used to handling the problem from the perspective of ideological consciousness, professional ethics or work style, rather than from which of psychology or behavioral science. Basing on psychology and behavioral science, the objective analysis of the causes of job burnout and proper psychological interventions may achieve better results than the traditional ideological education. In this thesis, taking Shantou Customs as an example, the author uses questionnaires and case studies in her research of Customs officers’job burnout. She divides the officers sufferred from job burnout into3groups:job dissatisfaction, job fear and job numbness. With a view to eliminate the job burnout among Customs officers, relevant interventions are provided:the improvement of job security system, the introduction of the EAP project, targeted psychological counseling and creation of harmonious working atmosphere, etc.
