China in2014assumed the rotating presidency of Asia-Pacific EconomicCooperation (APEC) and advocated the pragmatic construction of the Free Trade Areaof Asia-Pacific (FTAAP), which has drawn the attention of all parties concerned. Thispaper analyzes reasons behind China’s changing attitude towards FTAAP as well asobstacles China may encounter in the future, and made practical policy suggestionsfor Chinese government about how to further promote the construction of FTAAP.This paper consists of an introduction and five main chapters. The first chapter isa literature review of researches on FTAAP both home and abroad. The secondchapter introduces main theories that may be helpful in analyzing FTAAP, includingViner’s Custom Union Theory, Richard Cooper’s interdenpendence Theory, RobertKeohane and Joseph Nye’s Complex Interdependence Theory. The third chapterreviews the development of FTAAP and points out that China has now became theguide instead of follower in the construction process of FTAAP. The fourth chapteranalyzes both internal and external reasons why China now actively promotes FTAAPconstruction. The fifth chapter discusses challenges and obstacles China may be facewith in the process. The last chapter provides policy advice on tackling thoseobstacles.
