As the final part of commodity circulation, the retail industry is the focal point of consumption pulling the economy. The retail industry has obvious function in promoting the growth of national economy, connecting the consumption and production, meeting consumers’ demand and absorbing social labor, and so forth. In the 1990 s, with the high speed of the process of urbanization, the scale of China’s urban population has rapidly expanded. The promotion of new type urbanization has further improved the consumption level of residents. The consumption concept and consumption structure is also changing. As a result, retail formats change rapidly. As the carrier of the retail industry development, cities are closely related with the transition of retail business. In the process of China’s new pattern of urbanization, cities’ factor supply, urban residents’ behavior and technology innovation have changed a lot, which are the important motivation of retail format structure adjustment and format innovation. Therefore, during the process of new pattern urbanization, it is necessary to study the retail format transition.In the process of China’s new pattern of urbanization,many problems have appeared in the retailing industry. The emergence of so many retail format lacked periodicity, and also didn’t have obvious competitive advantages. Moreover, in the process of development of the retailing industry,some retail formats didn’t have accurate market positioning, which has caused the fierce homogeneous competition. And most of the retail formats have poor innovation efficiency. How to find the effective way to promote the development of retail format during the process of new type urbanization is the key element to drive the appropriate transition of the retail format and promote healthy and orderly development of China’s retail industry.This paper aims to analyze the transition and development of the retail format under the background of new pattern urbanization. By combining the path and characteristic of China’s retail format transition and the literature analysis method, comparative analysis method and theory analysis method, this paper study the transition and development trend of China’s retail format. Based on summarizing the factors which influence the retail format transition, agglomeration economy theory is to be used. From static agglomeration economy effect and dynamic agglomeration effect, the changes of cities’ factor supply, consumption behaviors, consumption structure and technology innovation will be analyzed, so that the process that new type urbanization accelerates the transition of retail format can be explained. Moreover, based on the above analysis, this paper will draw the research conclusion and forecast the development trend of China’s retail industry.
