Study On The Orchid History And Culture

Orchid is a world famous flower with long history and rich cultural connotations. Chineseorchids have enjoyed a laudatory name of “The King of Fragrant Plants” since ancient times.However, due to the different understanding and explanation to the ancient books andliteratures, dispute still exists in whether the orchid that Confucius and Qu Yuan mentioned isso-call Chinese orchid (Cymbidium) or not. Meanwhile, western orchids fascinate people withtheir colorful flowers and legendary and mysterious culture, but little research to this can befound in domestic. Therefore, in order to clarify Chinese orchid origin and deeply explore,inherit and carry forward orchid culture, it is very necessary to study on its history and culture.This study carried on with Chinese and western orchid history and culture as researchobjects and combined with domestic and foreign literature at all times, with the methods ofliterature analysis, interdisciplinary study and comparative research to comb, classify, refineand summarize the orchid history and culture content in different historical stages and differentcountries and regions. The conclusions of this study are listed as follows:1. Chinese orchid history origin and development process were more clearly sorted out;ancient Chinese orchid distribution of north boundary was demonstrated to reach northernHenan (appr Northern latitude35°); the ancient Chinese orchid in “Chun Qiu” and “ZhanGuo” period (770B.C.-476B.C.) was further defined as the so-called Chinese orchid today.2. The emergence of Western orchid and its historical development process were explored.3. The age and development process of the representative species of western orchids suchas Phalaenopsis amabilis, Cattleya hybrida, Vandal Miss Joaguim were preliminary clarified.4. The orchid culture system was preliminary built through the classifying andsummarizing of the orchid culture content such as orchid fantasy stories, myths and legends,orchid with literature, art, landscape, social life, orchid image and implication, etc.
