With the development of computer technology, inter-disciplines such as virtual plant become more and more popular. In recent years, Functional-Structural Plant Model (FSPM), integrating plant structure and physiological functions together within one system, has become one of the most significant branches in the field of plant modelling. With the ability of representing the association and inter-feedback between plant functions and structure, functional-structural plant modelling has been used in many works.Aiming at simulating growth processes of rice, a case study of developing a Functional-Structural model of rice seedling was deployed as a first step.3D objects were used to construct sheath as stems, while Basier Surface was used to form the leaves. By interpreting the L-system symbols, a dynamic 3-demensional architecture of rice seedling was developed. The model integrated the morphological structure based on L-system and the physiological function model to simulate the growth process of rice seedling. Physiological model of rice seedling consists of photosynthesis module and assimilate partitioning module. And the nitrogen concentration of the growth environment was considered and implemented to influence the processes of nitrogen metabolism. And then, a Functional-Structural model of rice was developed with the open source modelling platform GroIMP using the tailored modelling language XL, visualizing growth of rice individuals from seedlings to grain filling stage with structural dynamics. The rice seedling model and the whole growth rice model can be extended with proper implementation, and different physiological modules can be added to improve the prediction of the growth dynamics. With efforts of the researchers and breeders, the model can be eventually used as a assistant tool for virtual breeding and other field practice.
