This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary selenium levels on growth and development, serum biochemical parameter, carcass traits, meat quality and antioxidant capacity to determined the optimum selenium level for 1-70 days old YangZhou goslings. This study was conducted with simple factor experiment arrangement. A total of 360 one-day-old YangZhou goslings with similar initial body weight were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups(I, II, III,Ⅳ and Ⅴ),6 replications per group, with 12 geese each replication. The control group was fed with basal diet, and trial groups I, while the treatment groups were fed with basal diet supplemented with 0.15,0.30,0.45 and 0.60 mg/kg selenium, respectively. The experiment lasted for 70 days and divided into two periods. The results indicated that:(1) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on BW of goslings at the age of 28-day-old and 70-day-old (P<0.05); had significant influence on ADFI of goslings at 1-28 days old period (P<0.05),but had no significant influence on ADFI of goslings at 29-70 days old (P>0.05); had significant influence on ADG of goslings at 1-70 days old (P<0.05);had no significant influence on F/G of goslings at 1-70 days old (P>0.05), theBW and ADG of goslings in group III was significantly higher than the control group.(2) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on half-diving depth, body length, breast width, shank length and shank circumference of goslings at the age of 70-days-old (P<0.05). had no significant influence on body measurements goslings at the age of 28-day-old (P<0.05);(3) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on surem total protein and albumin of goslings at the age of 28-days-old (P<0.05),the TP and GLB of goslings in group III was significantly higher than the control group; had significant influence on interleukin-2 in serum of goslings at the age of 70-day-old (P<0.05); had no significant influence on alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase in serum (P>0.05); had no significant influence on urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose(P>0.05).(4) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on gastrointestinal development of goslings (P<0.05); had significant influence on development of heart, liver and pancreas of goslings at the age of 70-days-old (P<0.05);(5) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on whole net carcass percentage of goslings at the age of 70-day-old (P<0.05), had no significant influence on percentage of half net carcass, percentage of breast muscle, percentage of leg muscle and percentage of abdominal fat (P>0.05); the effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on water loss percentage of breast muscle of goslings at the age of 70-day-old (P<0.05), the water loss percentage of breast muscle of goslings in group IV and V was significantly lower than the control group, but had no significant influence on pH, shear stress and intermuscular of breast muscle(P>0.05).(6) The effects of different levels of selenium had significant influence on antioxidant indicators of goslings at the age of 70-day-old (P<0.05),GSH-PX and T-AOC of goslings in group II and III was significantly higher than the control group, MDA of goslings in group III and IV was significantly lower than the control group. In conclusion, the optimum dietary selenium supplementation could significantly promote the growth and development, enhance immunity and antioxidant capacity, optimize the composition of carcass, improve meat quality of goslings. The results of experiment suggest that the selenium requirement of goslings at the age of 1-28 days old was 0.33 mg/kg,the selenium requirement of goslings at the age of 29-70 days old was 0.37 mg/kg.
