At present, plug seedling nursery are well used in our country, and the traditional plug method is bottom hole open, which could cause the root drilling from the bottom hole, thus the roots will be easily hurt when moving and plug needs to water frequently, which will waste water. In order to solve these issues, Beijing Vegetables Research Center (BVRC) developed the side hole open plug method, open double vertical holes surrounding each plug, each vertical hole is not lower than the bottom of plug, which would help saving water at the plug’s bottom. At the same time, it could avoid the roots drilling from the bottom. To understand the application effects of this new side hole open plugging method, this study will use tomato (solanaceous vegetables) and cucumber (gourd vegetables) as test materials to study. And we observed the effects of different hole open methods in different seasons on plant seedlings’ growth and development, watering and water utilization, and ensure the feasibility of side hole open plug seedling nursery on solanaceous and gourd vegetables. The main contents are as follows:1.Tomato cultivar ’Ouguan’ was used as materials, to study the effects of side hole and bottom hole open plug methods on seedlings’growth and water saving respectively in summer and winter. The results showed that side hole open tomato seedlings grew better compared with the bottom hole plug in summer and autumn. The seedlings grown in side hole open plug are higher and thicker with larger biomass and higher seedling index (0.0178,22.76% more). During the whole nursery, the average day watering amount is 25.58 kg on the side hole open plugs, which is 11.7% less than bottom hole open. In winter, compared with bottom hole open plugs, the seedling index of side hole open plugs is 0.0154, which is 16.67% more. The day watering amount is 18.144 kg on side hole open plugs, which is 9.81% less. The results shown that, the side hole open plug method could promote the seedling growth better and save more water.2.Cucumber varieties ’Jinyou 35’ was used as materials to study the effects of side hole and bottom hole open plug methods on seedlings’growth and water saving respectively in summer and winter. The results showed that side hole open tomato seedlings grew better compared with the bottom hole plug in summer and autumn. The seedlings grown in side hole open plug are higher and thicker with larger biomass and higher seedling index (0.1167,11.67% more). During the whole nursery, the average day watering amount is 12.298 kg on the side hole open plugs, which is 19.63% less than bottom hole open. In winter, compared with bottom hole open plugs, the seedling index of side hole open plugs is 0.0224, which is 17.89% more. The day watering amount is 16.291 kg on side hole open plugs, which is 10.34% less. The results shown that, the side hole open plug method could promote the seedling growth better and save more water.
