Spent mushroom residue, peat, bio-bacterial manure, vermiculite and perlite were composed to two kinds of compound substrate, taking peat:vermiculite:perlite=50:20:30 as CK and tomato cv. Hongrui as the test plant, the physical and chemical characteristics of compound substrate and growth of tomato seedling were investigated in Experiment 1. This study indicated that:The T1(mushroom residue:peat:vermiculite:perlite=20:30:20:30) was most efficient for plant height, stem diameter, leaf areaindex, chlorophyll content and so on. Therefore, mushroom residue can be used to replace the peat to tomato seedling. Which can greatly reduce the production cost of substrate. In Experiment 2, the six different matrix formulations was designed by different volume ratios mixing from five kinds of substrate material including mushroom residue, peat, bio-bacterial manure, vermiculite and perlite. The experiment was conducted to study effects of different matrix formulations on growth, dry and fresh weight, specific leaf weight of tomato. The objective of this study was to provide theoretical and technical basis for future test, and to choose the appropriate matrix recipe for tomato cultivation. The main results were shown as follows:Compound medium of mushroom residue:peat:bio-bacterial manure:vermiculite: perlite=25:20:5:20:30 was the best. The seeding plant height, stem diameter, leaf area index, chlorophyll content, shoot dry weight, dry weight of underground, seedling index and specific leaf weight was the highest. It had significant difference compared with CK(peat:bio-bacterial manure:vermiculite: perlite=45:5:20:30). Therefore, mushroom residue can replace peat to be used in production.
