Riparian space in the city is the most unique gallery space and has a potential value of landscape. Generally, shelter forests or amenity forests are built on both sides of the banks in or around a city, making riparian space play an important role in landscape function. As one of the scenic forests, riparian forests not only have corridor landscape characteristics, but also present beautiful sceneries because of standing by the river. Based on traditional methods for landscape forests research, new methods were developed for riparian landscape forests research. Stand quality and aesthetic quality of the waterfront landscape forests were studied systematically in close-scene-scale from outside of the plots. Waterfront landscape forests were estimated with SBE method.12 landscape indexes, which influenced the quality of the waterfront landscape forests, were filtered. The average crown width, edge height, aquatic plants and the ratio of tree height and width of the river were significantly correlated to SBE(p<0.05). The color contrast, the proportion of water, seasonal changes, the number of vertical levels, type of riverbank, riverside hydrophilic probability, mingling, cleanliness of the stand were highly significantly correlated to SBE(p<0.01). Color patch features of waterfront landscape forests were analyzed and eight Indexes of scenic beauty were extracted:AI, LSI, PLADJ, EMN, PR, PRD, CONTAG, SHEI. Based on this, a near-distance riparian landscape forest quality evaluation method was explored. Then a landscape evaluation model was established. The waterfront landscape forests were divided into three levels with system clustering method and topsis evaluation method and the main features of different levels of riparian landscape forests were summarized.
