Appropriate utilization of water and soil resources is the core of agricultural production, and is therefore, of crucial importance in maintaining food security. The spatial-temporal match/mismatch of water and soil resources directly determines the sustainability of regional agriculture. Meanwhile, it also indirectly affects the social stability and economic development. Therefore, the investigation of the match/mismatch of water and soil resources is an vital task and calls for good attention.Anhui province is not only one of the thirteen main grain production zones in China, but also the frontier of undertaking the economic radiation and industrial transfer from the developed coastal areas. It is an area where regional land resources has been utilized intensively and is relatively lack in water resources. The present study on the match of water and land resources in Anhui Province is of theoretical significance, providing essential practical implications. In particular, this study offers insights into economically utilization of regional water resources, scientifically development of regional land resources, and thus securing the sustainability of regional agriculture. The present study firstly reviewed previous studies on water and land resources matching, the Gini coefficient method and the set pair analysis method. Based on the review, we determine our research methodology using smart methods mentioned above. Then, building upon the Gini coefficient method, combining with the available water resources per unit farmland, we the spatial-temporal variation of matching between water and soil resources were comprehensively and quantitatively investigated in Anhui province during recent thirteen years. Results showed that:1) the average annual water and soil resources levels of Anhui province does not match well, with the average annual Gini coefficient of 0.4449, which is better than that of China’s (0.5664) and the world average (0.5864). The Gini coefficient is higher than the cordon "0.4", suggesting that it still has large promotion space for the matching degree of water and soil resources.2) there exist obvious spatial differences in the matching coefficients of water and soil resource at the scale of Anhui province,i.e., southern Anhui superior to the Jianghuai area, and Jianghuai better than northern Anhui.3) set pair analysis yields highly mismatched state of water and soil resources in Anhui province, similar to that of Gini coefficient approach, which indicates the robustness of both approaches. The results suggest the applicability of set pair analysis on the evaluation of water and soil resources, which can provide effective methods for the matching analysis of regional water and soil resources. In view of the characteristic of mismatch and much difference between the overall and local resources, the utilization efficiency of water resources can be enhanced by implementing regional water resources, improving the efficiency of agricultural water in the water, strengthening the governance of water pollution, moderate exploitation groundwater well irrigation mode as well as to the residents of positive propaganda water-saving measures such as improving the efficiency of water resource utilization, which is better to realize the harmonious match of water and soil resources.
