Treated as an important strategic resource for our country, traditional Chinese matiera medica resources are significant foundation for the development and survival of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and Chinese pharmaceutical industry. Medicinal plants resources are the main part of traditional Chinese matiera medica resources, therefore research on evaluation and dynamic changes of them is related to the sustainable utilization of traditional Chinese medicine and the construction of ecological civilization in China, which possessing important practical significance. Rongcheng City is rich in unique medicinal plants for its own geographical location and natural environment characteristics. But the medicinal plants resources are uncertain in Rongcheng at present. In order to check the current situation of medicinal plants resources in Rongcheng, we carried out field investigation from 2014 to 2015 in Rongcheng, with support of the fourth National Chinese medicine resources survey project According to the survey results, this paper evaluates and analyzes the current situation of medicinal plants resources in Rongcheng and summarizes conclusions as follows:(1)There are three main vegetation types in Rongcheng area:conifer-broad leaf forest, swamps and grass. Coniferous forest, broad-leaved forest and shrub are minor. Medicinal plants resources in this region comprises a total of 473 species belonging to 317 genera of 111 lamilies. The total number of species accounted for about 30.71% of the total number of Shandong Province. Among them,293 genera of 82 families are seed plants, in which the main part is dicotyledonous plants. The medicinal plants resources in Rongcheng are relatively abundant so far.(2) The dominant families are Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Liliaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Ranunculaceae, Apiaceae, adding up to 221 species belonging to 136 genera of 111 families. They account for 42.23% and 49.11% of the total number of genera and species of medicinal plants, constituting the main part of medicinal plants. Among them Asteraceae own the largest amount with 53 species in 33 genera.(3) There are 31 significant medicinal plants species belonging to 26 genera of 22 families in this investigation, among which some species possess large quantity and frequency, such as Smilax china L., Sophora flavescens Ait., Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, Echinops grijsii Hance, Polygonum aviculare L., Polygonum perfoliatum L., Polygonum bistorta L., Cynanchum versicolor Bunge, Lonicera japonica Thunb., Phytolacca americana L. and Achyranthes bidentata BL(4) The number of medicinal seed-plants species is 436 currently, which is 136 less than the corresponding number in 1970s but 69 new species are found this time. The total number of species of medicinal seed plants in Rongcheng city is reduced by 67 species. The medicinal plants resources show a decreasing trend.(5) Three national protection of medicinal herb species are found in worrying survival situation in Rongcheng, including Glycine soja Sieb. et Zucc, Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schmidt ex Miq. and Vitex rotundifolia L. f.. Glehnia littoralis Fr. Schmidt ex Miq. and Vitex rotundifolia L. f. grow in sand beach, with very little stock and sporadic distribution.(6) In addition, we found new record species and genera in Shandong Province, Adoxa moschatellina L. in Adoxa and 7 newly recorded species in Rongcheng and Weihai, including Impatiens textori Miq., Ammannia multiflora Roxb., Lindernia crustacean (L.) F. Muell, Vicia kioshanica Bailey, Scrophularia buergeriana Miq. and Sicyos angulatus L. were firstly found in Rongcheng.
