| ObjectiveThe present study was aimed to investigate the effect ofMomordica charantia (MC) extracts on antioxidant status and lipidperoxidation in heart tissue of normal and STZ induced diabetic ratsMethodsRats became diabetic by a single administration of streptozotocin,The experiment was divided for4group: normal control group(group I),Normal MC treatment group(group II), Diabetes control group(group III)and Diabetes MC treatment group(group IV)。 Each group had12rats,then administration MC (13.33g/kg/day) extracts for30days. Thebody weight and blood glucose level were tested before and aftertreatment. The SOD, CAT, GST and GSH of serum and heart tissuewere tested at last.ResultsAfter30days treatment, rats were divided into six groups (I-IV)of12animals in each. Administration of MC extracts in diabetic ratshas remarkably improved the elevated levels of fasting blood glucose.A significant decrease in lipid peroxidation (p<0.01) and significantincrease in the activities of key antioxidant enzymes such as supero-xide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), glutathione-s-transferase(GST)and reduced glutathione (GSH) contents in heart tissue ofdiabetic rats were observed (IV) upon MC treatment. ConclusionsOur studies demonstrate the anti-hyperglycemic and anti-oxidative potential of Momordica charantia, which could exertbeneficial effects against the diabetes and associated free radicalscomplications in heart tissue. |
