Objectives: 1) Study on the correlation between the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and carotid artery intima-media thickness(IMT); 2) Study on the correlation between the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque. 3) To provide evidence for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease by observing the pathological changes of carotid artery and predicting coronary artery disease. Methods: 1.we studied the correlation between the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and carotid artery intima-media thickness. In the study, 202 patients with symptom of chest tightness or chest pain underwent coronary angiography. Before operation, all the patients in two groups have underwent carotid artery ultrasonography, which measuring the carotid artery intima-media thickness(IMT), the number and thickness of plaques and evaluating the severity of plaques(Crouse integral). According to the results of coronary angiography, we defined the degree of coronary artery stenosis≥50% as coronary heart disease(CHD) group(including 115 patients),and of what<50% defined as non-CHD group(including 87 patients). In the coronary heart disease group, according to the number of vessel involved, we divided into single vessel lesion group, two- vessel lesion group and three-vessel lesion group. We analysed whether there were differences on the carotid artery IMT and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque between the CHD group and non-CHD group. In addition, the differences on the carotid artery IMT and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque in CHD group between each subgroups and of what between non-CHD group and each subgroups in CHD group was investigated. We evaluate the relationship between the Gensini score of coronary artery disease and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque. 2. Evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of carotid artery ultrasound. Results: 1. The differences on the carotid artery IMT and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque between the CHD group and non-CHD group were statistically significant(P < 0.05). The differences on the carotid artery IMT and the Crouse integral of carotid artery plaque in CHD group between each subgroups were also statistically significant(P < 0.05). The Gensini score of coronary artery disease and the Crouse score of carotid artery plaque were positive correlation(P < 0.05).2. Carotid artery ultrasound’s sensitivity, specificity, positive rate, negative rate and the overall diagnostic’s accordance rate are 93%, 71.3%, 81%, 88.5%, 83.6%, respectively. Conclusions: There was a positive correlation between the severity of coronary atherosclerosis and carotid atherosclerosis, which showed that carotid ultrasonography has a certain reference significance for prediction of coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. It can be applied to clinical early screening for coronary atherosclerotic heart disease.
